The 2007 Sunday for Detainees at Nkondengui Central Prison, Yaounde, Cameroon

LHM-C was present at the 2007 Detainees' Sunday. This took place June 24, 2007 at the Yaoundé central prison of Nkondengui. The detainees' Sunday is the only Sunday in a whole year that Christians think about those who have lost their freedom in the society. This year's celebration had many spiritual and social activities such as: Prayer wake keepings in some chapels, sport encounters, round table conferences, free medical consultations to detainees and their moderators.

This year's celebration was a good opportunity for both the president of the Protestant Christian Community at the Nkondengui prison in Yaoundé and the Registrar of the prison to congratulate churches and Organizations that worked hand in hand with them for some major realizations such as the building of a pavilion, that was named, " Palace of Repentance ", and others. "The Palace of Repentance " is located inside the prison in an area named " Nazareth ." According to the President of the Protestant Community, Nkondengui prison has more than 4000 detainees:

  • 60% of them receive no visit,
  • 05% are foreign nationals
  • 70% of them are defendants
  • 40% of them are illiterate

LHM-C was acknowledged for having financed the major part of the " Palace of Repentance " building, and by promoting evangelism by the distribution of BCC and the weekly visits its Staff pay to the detainees at the prison.

What we can say here, after more than six years of prison ministry at the Nkondengui Central Prison, is that the prison is a place of terrible sufferings. Spaces are so congested. It is also a place of various needs; most of the inmates lack dresses, food and medical needs.

As far as our BCC are concerned, we have more than 80 registered students at the Nkondengui Central Prison. 24 of them just graduated, among whom two women. We continue to ask God to help LHM-C staff in endeavours to bring Christ to the detainees through our various programs, so that more and more of them can be encouraged to do the BCC and become members the church of Christ.
