CONGREGATIONS STIRRED BY VISIT

“Our hearts have been gladdened this day. After over six years without seeing any representative of the church from Accra, little did we think there was going to be such a visit again? Words cannot express how grateful and inspired we are by your visit. We are indeed grateful to the Lutheran Media Ministry for remembering us in your programs. We wish you travelling mercies back to Accra and please do accept this gift as a sign of our appreciation”.

These were part of the goodbye message of Evangelist Francis Nawal to staff of the Ministry at the end of a four-day working visit to the area. He spoke on behalf of churches in the Zamarama area of Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo Region.

When staff of the Ministry (Director and Audience Relations Manager) left Accra on a visit to churches in the Kintampo area the objectives included strengthening ministry relations with congregations in the area. The visit was to afford us the opportunity of first hand information to inform decisions about Ministry activities in the area.

On arrival in each of the areas, we were moved to encourage our brothers and sisters never to relent in their service to the Lord despite the very uncomfortable situations they find themselves.  Visit to all the areas presented staff with a new opportunity to share the gospel. Most of the members reportedly have left the church because they felt they had been abandoned and there was no need to be part of the Lutheran family. The few members were contemplating about the future of the church.

It was a comforting scene as church leaders in all places visited could not hide their joy about the visit of the Ministry and the presentation of clothing and books. After informing them of our mission, the leaders pledged their support to help reach out and bring more people into the church. Daniel Chumba, headmaster of a local junior secondary school volunteered to be a BCC facilitator in the area.

“REFORMATION MEANS A LOT TO ME”

“Reformation day is a very special and important day celebrated by all Lutherans and also all protestant churches in commemorating what Martin Luther did 500 years ago. If not for this reformationbanner even the Bible which seem so common to day was something which had been withheld by some religious authorities in the 16th century as such we should realise the essence of celebrating such a revolution”. These were the exact words that run out of the mouth of a man who saw the essence of this celebration as soon as he was given the mandate to address the august house.
Not a Lutheran but a Methodist, Mr. Mantey was highly filled with the joy of listening to choral music as part of the celebration of the reformation day. Further on he tried to make clear the intense importance of this celebration by linking it with Christmas celebration.
The unique thing about Mr. Mantey and his wife was that, though they heard of dlgthe choral concert so late, they were still able to make it to the venue all the way from Larteh in the eastern region, about 150miles away from Accra, something which seemed so impossible to achieve. He further on went on to explain all the inconveniences he and his wife went through before popping up at the venue.
His story touched all who were present and especially those who knew just a little about the importance of the reformation. Such people now showed more affection for the program by participating vigorously in the choral concert. Since music revamps the defunct soul, he was very happy to see all those wonderful choirs perform with great enthusiasm.
Finally he congratulated the Lutheran Media Ministry for such an effort made to celebrate this world-changing reformation day and appealed to the ministry to extend invitation not only to Lutherans but to all people since the reformation by Luther was not only for Lutherans but the entire world. He also called on the ministry to make available books on reformation so many could read and appreciate the work done by Christ through his servant Luther. He pledged to support the effort of LMM to reach out to the world with God’s message of hope.

NEW CONGREGATIONS PLANTED

Two new Lutheran Congregations are scheduled to start soon. Thanks to the  wonderful support and contribution of the Rural Outreach Team for this wonderful achievement.
The Rural Outreach Team of the Ministry has been engaged in Rural Outreach programs since 2005 in a bid to bring the gospel closer to our rural folks and to also serve as encouragement for those already in the faith.
This fiscal year was another successful year for the Rural Outreach Team popularly referred to as Out of Comfort Zone (OCZ) team. As the name depicts, these volunteers for the good of God’s work leave the comfort of their homes in urban areas to spread the gospel in rural areas.
Through the activities of the OCZ team, two new Lutheran congregations are bound to commence soon. The first is located at Sota in the Greater Accra Region, a few miles off the Afienya-Dodowa Road. The Sota congregation is  a preaching station under the mother church Trinity Lutheran Congregation in Tema. The first worship service in Sota was held when the OCZ team carried out a three day outreach program in the area. The program was climaxed with a Sunday worship service which attracted close to forty new members.
The follow-up done by Rev. Alexander Avor has seen almost twenty people from Sota been baptized after two months of carrying out Outreach activity in the area.
There was an attempt to plant a church in  Cape Coast Amamoma, some years ago which did not work. However, the idea has  been revived once again and now a new church is emerging. There is worship every Sunday. In an Outreach activity carried out in the area to open a Bible Correspondence Course Office, members of the OCZ team were again present to lend a support to  brothers and sisters of Amamoma come together again after so many years. There were  new members who offered to assist with activities in the area under the supervision of Rev. Charles Koufie.

In another development, theMinistry was again able to bring back another Lutheran congregation this time in Accra. The Dome Lutheran Church which started some years back but had to fold up was also revived. Through an Inter church sports festival organized by the Ministry, the Dome congregation  now meets for worship services in a rented classroom. Most of them are members who had to stand in and compete for the Dome congregation in the various sporting disciplines during the festival.
Thanks to the various Lutheran congregations who participated in the festival. St. Paul’s from Kanda, All Saints from Anyaa, St. Peters from Medina, Trinity from Tema. All participating congregations gave a good performance in all the contested games.
In the end, however, the team from All Saints in Anyaa won glory in the football which is undoubtedly the passion of the nation.
The Ministry also appreciates the effort of a church member who paid the rent for the Dome church to fellowship in the classroom. We are very grateful to such people and we encourage ourselves to help in every small way that we can. Let us remember these congregations in our prayers so they grow from strength to strength.
